Napa Valley Zooma Runner Spotlight Series #3

The Napa Valley Zooma Race Ambassadors are excited to bring you our “Runner Spotlight Series”!  Each week we will be featuring a Zooma Napa Valley half marathon or 10K runner on each of our blogs.  As women runners, we want to use our role as an Ambassador to highlight and share the stories behind the incredible women preparing to run Zooma in June.  Each runner has a special and unique story and we invite you to learn about them through this series.  Please feel free to click through the links at the end of each post to read about additional Zooma Racers.

Meet Runner Deborah …

Deborah Atkins

  • Name:  Deborah Atkins
  • Age:  48
  • Current City: Los Banos, CA
  • Race:  Half Marathon

Why are you running Zooma Napa Valley?  I’m running to be with some of the best people I know. We are scattered across the country, but with daily chit chat and the occasional text, I’ve come to count on these women like sisters.

When and why did you start running?  I started running 5 years ago after I was a few months into the Weight Watchers program. I’ve never ever been athletic in my life.  We had just returned from a 20th anniversary trip to Ireland, and I hated every picture. I decided to get serious about weight loss, and the C25K program called my name. As I lost weight and improved my fitness level, I (slowly) grew to love how running made me feel. I could set goals, work towards them, and accomplish them. It opened my eyes to what was possible for people my age.

How many races have you done and which is your favorite?  A bunch of 5ks, several 10Ks, a 9K, and two half marathons. My favorite race was the She.Is.Beautiful 10K in Santa Cruz. I finished in 57 minutes (a fabulous PR by 8 minutes), I ran with 2 of my long-distance running buddies who met me for the race, and I really loved the vibe from an event designed just for women.

If you could pick one celebrity to run with, who would it be and why?

Adam Levine. He seems like he’d be a great person to chat with (crucial in a running buddy), plus he is smokin’ hot! I’d be sucking in my tummy the whole way!
What is your favorite running memory? The first time I ever ran 5 miles. It was so freaking hard! I was running with a great running friend who had never gone that far either. We pushed and pulled and dragged each other to finish, and I couldn’t believe it when we were done.

What is your one running “must have”?  Good shoes

What is your favorite post-run indulgence?  Chocolate milk and a nap!

Who is your running inspiration? My log-distance running buddies.

What is the most important lesson you have learned from running? The biggest obstacle to anything is mostly in my own head.
