The Napa Valley Zooma Race Ambassadors are excited to bring you our “Runner Spotlight Series”! Each week we will be featuring a Zooma Napa Valley half marathon or 10K runner on each of our blogs. As women runners, we want to use our role as an Ambassador to highlight and share the stories behind the incredible women preparing to run Zooma in June. Each runner has a special and unique story and we invite you to learn about them through this series. Please feel free to click through the links at the end of each post to read about additional Zooma Racers.
Meet Runner Janet…
- Name: Janet Carlton
- Age: 55
- Current City: Copperas Cove, Texas
- Race (10K or half marathon): 10K
Why are you running ZOOMA Napa Valley? My husband and I will be visiting my son and daughter-in-law in Tiburon and we all decided it would be a great time for a fun girl’s weekend running event! Plus, ZOOMA puts on a top notch run at Lost Pines so decided to see how they do outside of Texas.
When and why did you start running? I’ve always been active and interested in fitness. In my late 30’s I started dabbling in running as a way of staying fit and it just grew from there. Having many friends who are also concerned with fitness and who enjoy running, it just has become part of our lives personally and within our relationships. It’s so much better having good friends who love to run!
How many races have you done and which was your favorite? Oh, too many to count but 10Ks are my favorite. The Capitol 10K in Austin, Texas is always at the top of my list of favorites each year. I’m guessing since ZOOMA is now adding a 10K to their race series it will likely be a fave as well!
If you could pick one celebrity to run with, who would it be and why? Hmm, this is hard because I don’t think I’d be one to hang out with “celebrities”. However, after giving it some thought I think Sandra Bullock. She seems so down to earth and is a Texas girl who likes to run!
What is your favorite running memory? I guess I would have to say the San Diego Marathon on my 51st birthday! It was a huge accomplishment with two great running friends followed by a week long vacation up the Hwy 1 seeing the beautiful State of California. Then, there is also a 5K run in Austin, Texas last year that I did with my dearest high school best friend who decided to get fit, lose 50 or so pounds and start running. The first 5K I did with her was AMAZING! To see her push so hard and make it to the finish line was so special….just can’t describe it! I ran with her that day and, although it was hard not to run “my” race, it was probably one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had.
What is your one running must-have? Not one, but two: chap stick & gum!
What is your favorite post-run indulgence? Usually a burger or something I don’t always eat. Depends on where I am. Wine is always good too, so ZOOMA & Napa will be perfect!
Who is your running inspiration? I don’t know that it’s any ONE person; I think it changes. However, at every run I am in awe of those folks who come out and run a race and give it their all with all levels of challenges—many of which are not obvious and we never know what exactly they are dealing with. I just think I’m inspired by anyone willing to push themselves out of their comfort zone.
What is the most important lesson you have learned from running? I can do so much more than I ever dreamed I could! I have gained confidence from being able to push myself and by not just settling. So, I guess I’ve gained mental strength from running.
