Because We Are Moms

From the moment they arrive in this world, we take on an entire new set of feelings and emotions.  We become instantly protective, our hearts grow bigger, our souls fall in love.  We are more intuitive, we are awakened and aware.  We become more emotional than we were.  We are able to grow instinct like we have never had before.  We hear and see everything differently.  We become caretakers, we are more watchful, we are sensitive to everything around us.  We are about to embark on to the most amazing, confusing, stressful and wonderful journey of our lives.   We become Moms

There are no instruction books for this job that has all of the sudden fallen onto us.  There are no guidelines, there are no rules, sometimes there is no rhyme or reason.  We just figure it out.  We go with the flow, we learn as we go.  Each day is different, no matter how structured or organized we make it.  We are given the most amazing gift there is and we embrace it.  We eat, sleep and breathe it.  We laugh more, we cry more, we may even chat with God more.

We let them choose their own style and dress themselves.  We watch them grow and excel in their passions.  We cheer them on.  We heal their wounds.  We go to the ends of the earth for them.  We drive all hours of the night for them.  We are always on call.  We sacrifice and we don’t think twice about it.  We notice and pay attention to everything around us, like human radars.

We are warriors, we are protectors, we are the soft in a hard world.  We are not always thanked or appreciated.   We don’t sleep through the night, we nap during the day.  We hold them tight and never want to let go.  We are proud.  We do the best we can  and hope it is okay.  We try and sometimes fail, we pick up the pieces.  We celebrate and rejoice and at times some of us mourn.  We thank God for each day we have with them, we are blessed.  We ask the Lord to watch over them while we can’t.  We chaperone dances, we drive on field trips, we check their phones, we monitor them, we watch and pay attention.

We stay up late and finish projects, we pack lunches and make breakfasts.  We cook more than one dinner at times in order to make everyone happy.  We make pancakes for dinner.  We eat standing at the kitchen sink.  We take long baths after they are asleep.  We dig though laundry hampers looking for missing jock straps or the pair of skinny jeans that did not get washed.  We embarrass them often, we play with them, we sing out loud and out of tune when there favorite song is on.

We cry when they cry, we hurt when they hurt.  We will fight for them, we will be their advocates, we are their voices when they can’t be.  We will love them no matter what, while being so angry at them.  We will be disappointed and proud.  We will lift them up and carry them {emotionally and physically}.  We will be proud of them and brag about them.  We will read to them the same book over and over until they we will fall asleep.  We will let them climb into our beds and sleep on the edge to make them comfortable.

We will do whatever it takes no matter what to help them be the most amazing they can be in life.  We will watch them grow as we grow older.  As we gray and embrace the stress laugh lines on our faces.  We we help them shine and be comfortable in their own skin.  We will be the role models they need to look up to.  We will guide and direct them the best we can.

We will do all of this and so much more because … WE ARE MOMS  and we would not change that for anything in this world.

  11. Beautiful post Lynda. You worded it so perfectly. Kids make us who we are.

  12. Mother’s Day is very complicated for me. I’m a step-mother who is estranged from her adoptive mother and her bio mother adopted a son which now makes me the “secret daughter.” It was a pretty good day in the end. My husband was very kind in helping me end it well. I handle all of this better on the other 364 days of the year. =)
