I Am A Runner

Since the kids have been back in school, my early morning 5:30 a.m. run schedule has been moved to the 9:00 a.m. run schedule.  I knew this was going to happen, I actually caught myself coming up with excuses as to why this would suck {okay maybe a bit harsh, but I was bummed out}.  I knew that the later the morning got, I would have more reasons to talk my way out of going.  I would get caught up on my computer, posting on facebook, tweeting, reading fellow bloggers, going through both email accounts, getting hungry since I had not gone early, knowing that the weather was getting warmer the later it got {I loved the early morning run with the cold chill}.  Then I would start in on the things that needed to be done around the house, laundry, breakfast dishes, well you get it.  See how quick the morning could go by and before you know it, BAM done, over, gone.  That window, the window that is a special and very valuable time for us.  The window that will shut if we don’t take that opportunity, it shuts and we most likely did not go through it and achieve our goal for that day.

No not happening, I am standing firm on this one and I refuse to let the excuses get in the way of my time for me!  All that other stuff can wait and will be there when I am done.  So for now, I will embrace the steps towards my morning Euphoria.

  • Pull the hair back into my ponytail {my hair stylist really loves how I wear hair bands almost every day} poor broken hair.
  • Swish the mouthwash around as I just don’t have the time to do a full brushing {like anyone is going to get close enough to my teeth and breath anyway}.
  • Search through the drawer for matching running socks {as if they ever match}.
  • Pee.
  • Clip on my MUST HAVE running item {my Pink Ipod shuffle} the original one, because she is just perfect.
  • Throw on my Faith wrist bracelet which I purchased for our daughter Faith two years ago and have kept for myself.  It has now become my most worn item as I feel that I carry “faith” with me where ever I go.
  • Pee second time.
  • Get the running app of the day that I chose to use up on my phone, hoping that I actually remembered to charge my phone {it is a toss up between my Nike + Run OR my Runtastic} just depends on my mood.
  • Guzzle down my water with my Vega Pre Workout Energizer.
  • Grab my Mizuno’s and lace up.  {by the way Mizuno, I need a new pair}.
  • Head out the door.
  • Turn around and go back in to pee again.
  • Now head out the door.

I made it, I am out and I could not be more happy.  Not every day will be a huge success.  Not every morning will I beat my previous day with time or distance.  Not every day will I feel great.  But I will be Running.  Yep, I am doing it and I am focused.  Do my legs hurt, do I feel tight in some areas, is my breathing off, am I feeling slow or fast.  Sure, of course.  Is it easy?  Some days yes, some no.  Do I get just far enough down the street and want to turn around?  Of course that happens now and then.

Do I stop listening to my head and go with my heart?  YES!  I feed off my desire to inspire my kids or others.  I run for me, but I also run for my family.  Why do I expect to have my children play sports, stay active and be healthy, go for their goals, push past their fears and step out of the comfort zone if I don’t?  I know I am a true runner, because I am one grumpy bitch miserable woman when I miss a day.  I am training for my next half marathon and I could not be more excited.

I have fallen in love with running all over again.  I am proud to be a part of a huge family out there, the runner’s in the world.  They are a family, they are very special people and I am inspired every day by runner’s.  I am inspired by all the running bloggers I read, I am inspired by the running stories, I am inspired by the determination and drive runner’s have.  I am touched by the heart of runners.  I love being out on a run and seeing a fellow runner on the path as myself and both of us giving one another the “wave” or the “head nod followed with a smile”.  It is almost like runner’s speak a special language.  They have an understanding of one another.  It is awesome, it is humbling, it is touching.  It is RUNNING.

  1. I don’t think Marilyn was talking about running shoes 🙂

I totally “get” this post. Yes, I am a runner too, have been for about 25 years. Yes, sometimes it’s hard, sometimes it really actually sucks, but most of the time it is the most awesome experience ever. We are runners!

  3. Ahhh running – I love it… but it is a love/hate relationship, right? Haha! I prefer to run just for fun but right now I’m training for the Chicago Marathon and that much running can tend to take the fun out of it 😉 I love this post and you gave me a bit of inspiration to get out there and get my 4-5 miles in this morning. Have a great weekend!

    • Becky, I honestly don’t think a marathon will ever be done by me…but then again who knows. Anyone taking on such a challenge as that is the most amazing to me 🙂 Good luck and can’t wait to hear about it.

  4. What a wonderful post! I am a morning runner for the same reasons. I get caught up in life and my excuses are just my life getting in the way of living! On the rare occassion, I have to run at lunch but I like to keep my morning runs as much as I can.
Also, I refulse to run more than 6 miles EVER without my Vega pre workout!

  8. Lynda, you are getting me all pumped to go for a morning run! I used to run religiously about 7 years ago but since then it’s been super random. I do find that if the atmosphere is right (like when I ran in the Hamptons the other week!), then I love it! Or if Chris wants to run with me, then I will most likely follow that eye-candy anywhere 😉

    Keep it up girly!

  9. This is a fantastic post. It made me want to go for a run!! I love that you run not only for yourself, but also to set a good example for your children. I would definitely consider myself a runner; I run both for fun and train for races. Having dealt with an injury the past year has really taught me to appreciate the way running makes me feel as opposed to training for a specific time goal. When I’m training hard I love the intensity and the drive I feel inside, but going out for a run just because feels amazing too.

  11. Great post! I am a morning runner and have been running a couple of years now and had no idea how much I would love it! Mornings are early and the excuses are easily formed but then that would be like standing myself up! Can’t have that! I love the running community- it is awesome!

  12. Love this. i love to run early in the morning, I find it so peaceful with few people out…away from the hustle and bustle of the city!

  13. Oh, I think it takes so much more discipline to get out mid day (or anything after first thing!). I really have to plan, mentally commit to it, and just do it!

  14. This is a great post! Yes I am a runner, although I am a runner on a hiatus right now. I have cartilage torn in my knee in a couple spots and as per my physical therapist I have had to reduce my activities to walking and low impact cardio. Before my hiatus, I was running for about 2 years off and on. It was mainly for fun and to get the feel of, it get used to it. Now however I plan to train for events such as 5k’s 10k’s and half marathons. I love to run in the mornings. I feel like superwoman when I do, like I’ve already accomplished so much that day just by getting up early and getting in my exercise and runs. I do evening runs on occasion I really don’t like doing it because there is still the residual heat from the day. It makes it very uncomfortable for a run!

  15. I love that you run on dirt and grass! I see runners here on the sidewalk and I wince thinking about their knees! I don’t run; I’m more of a Jillian Michaels weights and cardio kind! But, I get how enjoyable it must be to have the cool air on your face!
