Napa Valley Turkey Trot 2015

What a wonderful November Saturday morning.  Miss Faith and I headed out to run our third Napa Valley Turkey Trot and as usual, we had a great time.  We started running this event its first year, and we are huge fans of this family 5k.  The Napa Valley College is home of the Turkey Trot and it is a great run.  The course is easy and nice with some incline and a bit of trail {not too much}.  You have the option of doing a 5k run/walk OR a 1 mile walk.  There is food, classic 50’s music {so fun} and entertainment.

Last year’s event was a pretty wet and cold one as it just poured down rain.  This year the weather was amazing, the colors all around the Napa Valley are brilliant right now, and the air was just cool enough without feeling like we were going to be really cold.  The event has a nice smaller turnout, but is full of great energy.  Families are there with little ones and even strollers.  Some runners show up in costume, although I did not see as many as the first year.  I did see many turkey hats.

I enjoyed connecting with Brad {I had asked him his name while pacing together} I was inspired by his continued effort to keep going and never stopped to walk during the 3 miles.  I was a bit dizzy at one time and as we approached an incline during the run, I jokingly bid him adieu and told him I would catch up soon.  He responded with a reassuringly “yes you will”.  I smiled and felt the support of another runner {a total stranger}  to be very comforting and motivating.  I worked my way up that hill and was making sure my breathing was on point and steady enough to alleviate the dizziness I was experiencing.   This is not the first time I have been dizzy in the past two months and not the first time while out running, so I was taking precautions to not feel more off balance.  The top of incline was past me and I could see Brad ahead.  I checked myself and made sure I was feeling a bit more stable before getting a good pace again and in no time at all, there I was and I hear the words “there you are”, “I knew I would see you again”.  We laughed and had a small chat while keeping each others momentum {okay I think Brad was keeping me going}.  The finish line was in site and I remember seeing our daughter standing right at it wearing a shiny medal around her neck.  She had finished and was waiting for me.  It was a perfect way to end the race.  My heart was happy.

If I were to make a list of top favorite ways to spend with our daughter, right up there would be running with her.  We have attended the Napa Valley Turkey Trot all three years {since it’s beginning} and this is one of the most fun family events.  The folks connected with this race are so amazing and really wonderful.  If you have never done this particular Trot, I suggest getting it on the calendar for next year.  Bring your family and friends for sure and plan on having a great time.
