Holiday Project Day For Your Teen

School was out last week for the Christmas break and as usual {to keep up with tradition}, we hosted another holiday get together for miss Faith and her gal friends.  Since this requires getting everyone together before travel plans start, it means planning and prepping weeks ahead.  This isn’t our first rodeo, we know how to pull it together with plenty of time …

*Check calendar and choose a few different dates.
*Send out email invite with details and specified dates and include the time.  This gives everyone a chance to chime in on what works for them.
*Confirm final date and respond.
*Come up with food {menu}.
*Are you wanting to do easy?  Are you on a budget?  Do you want to have anyone bring something?
*Plan food for specific time of the day.

Thank goodness Faith is so creative.  This makes it easier on me.  We make a list and head to Michaels {my new favorite place for DIY}.  This year the craft/project was easy.  We had a great photo of Faith and her girlfriends hiking, so I had ordered weeks ago 10 of them in 4×6 sizes.  Now to find frames.  These would be the gift to take home after the get together.  Frames can be pricey, so Faith stuck to budget friendly and went with wooden ones so she could paint and personalize.

*Budget friendly
*DIY photo frames
*Frosting Bags
*Graham Crackers {gingerbread houses to be made}
*Candy {each girl was to bring a bag or two of favorite decorating candy}
*Homemade royal icing {this is the best to use for gingerbread houses}

Since this was a late afternoon get together, the meal would be more of a dinner.  Homemade nachos were served this year.  They are easy, quick and packed full of protein and healthy.  Some grilled chicken breasts, black beans, onions, cheese, cilantro, avocado, pico de gallo and homemade chips.  Layer everything in a casserole dish and bake.   Chocolate cupcakes with crushed candy canes and cream cheese frosting made for a tasty, festive treat.

Keep the setting simple and easy.  I love adding color pencils to brown paper, this is always fun.  The girls end of doodling all over and show of their artistic sides.

Creating a setting at home for our kids {teens} and their friends to hang out is so important to us.  Sure they need to grow and have their freedom and time, however being a parent who is involved {but not too hands on} is key to staying in the loop.  The sound of laughing and all the chit chatting going on is music to my ears.  Such great memories are made while our kids are still living at home.  We might annoy them {often} but I have no doubt that Faith will appreciate all those memories.  The afternoon turned into evening and everyone left with smiles on their face and some great quality time spent together.
